Fall Workday Series Announced

Volunteer with us! Wednesdays and Saturdays this fall 9 AM – 12 PM. RSVP below to join us.

Bring water, sturdy close-toed shoes, layers for warmth, orange clothing for safety during hunting season. Please bring work gloves, clippers, loppers, and hand saws if you have them. No tools? No problem, just let us know and we’ll bring extra. Snacks will be provided.

Opacum Woods Bench Installation Workday

Wednesday, October 23, 9am-12pm

What: Install bench- at Perry’s Point, end of the white trail overlooking the pond. This will be in remembrance of P. Edward “Perry” Norris, a friend and supporter of Opacum from its earliest days, who helped create the Opacum Woods conservation area.

Where: Opacum Woods, Old Brook Circle, Sturbridge, MA

Directions: Take New Boston Road from Route 20 in Sturbridge, just east of the 131 intersection. Take your fourth right onto Audubon Way, and then your second left on to Old Brook Circle. The trailhead is at the end of the cul-de-sac. 42.1248088, -72.0779179

Parking: Park at trailhead on Old Brook Circle. Parking is not permitted along Forest Lane.

What: Trail work- may include clearing overgrown vegetation, trimming branches, removing fallen trees/debris, repairing trail surfaces

Skorupski Family Woodland Trail Workday

Where: Skorupski Family Woodland, Silver St, Monson, MA

Directions: Take Silver Street from Route 20 in Monson. Follow road for 0.8 miles, the trail head will be on your left. You can also type in 324 Silver St, Monson into GPS and the property will be across the street from this address. 42.141334, -72.384803

Thompson Family Forever Wild Preserve Workday

Saturday, November 16, 9am-12pm

What: Trail work- may include clearing overgrown vegetation, trimming branches, removing fallen trees/debris, repairing trail surfaces

Where: Thompson Family Forever Wild Preserve, 904 Eastford Rd, Southbridge, MA

Directions: Heading South on Elm St in Southbridge, take a right on Eastford Road. Follow road for 2 miles, trail head will be on your right, just south of Dennison Drive. You can also type in 904 Eastford Rd, Southbridge into the GPS. 42.047853, -72.058548

Parking: There is limited parking for two or three cars along the edge of the road. Use extra caution when entering & exiting your vehicle. Carpooling encouraged. Let us know if interested and we can assist with organizing.


Claire Birtz and Morse Trail Workday

Saturday, November 23, 9am-12pm

Where: Claire Birtz Wildlife Sanctuary & Morse Woodland Preserve, 444 Tipton Rock Rd, Southbridge, MA

Directions: Heading South on Route 169, take a right on Tipton Rock Road. Follow the road for 0.2 miles, trail head will be on your left. Use GPS address 444 Tipton Rock Road. Please beware that sections of Tipton Rock Road are impassable! Do not approach from Blackmer Rd. or Lebanon Hill. 42.037396, -72.015882

Holiday Wreath Making Workshop

Saturday, December 7, 9am-12pm

What: Holiday Wreath Making Workshop- we will discuss the importance of sustainable forest harvesting practices and how to identify the different species of trees and plants in the area. Participants will gain hands-on experience in foraging, learning which materials can be harvested responsibly without harming the environment. We will walk along moderate terrain to collect evergreen branches and pinecones to put together a holiday wreath that participants can take home.

Notes: Moderate terrain trails with some steep sections. Please bring work gloves and clippers if you have them. If not, let us know and we will bring extra. Snacks will be provided. No previous crafting experience is necessary. Dress warmly and wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking on forest trails. Join us for a fun and fulfilling day of creativity, learning, and connection with nature!
